Jamaican Patties

What's up ladies?  A few days ago, I was really craving for Jamaican patties.  The bad thing is we live in a province and apparently, Jamaican patties are no available in our area which is a disaster if your favorite food is Jamacain patties and you are craving for it right now.  I've got to do something to satisfy my craving, so asked my friend, Google, and  boy was he kind enough to give me lots of recipes.  I just tweaked and combined recipes because some ingredients are not available and I wanted to make it toaster oven ready as I do not have the luxury of a proper oven.  Here's how I did it.
Jamaican Patties

For ingredients, I used:
1.  One teaspoon of baking soda
2.  Two cups sieved all-purpose flour
3.  One cup butter
4.  One teaspoon curry powder mix
5.  One half cup cold water
Jamaican Patties
For the filling, i used:
1.  Chili powder
2. Oregano
3.  Thyme
4.  Salt and pepper
5. Minced garlic
6.  Ground pork/beef
7.  Finely chopped onion
8.  Hot sauce
Jamaican Patties
First, mix the flour and the curry powder.  Make sure your mixture is free of lumps.

Next, add some butter.  It is important that we use cold butter for this recipe to make the crust flaky.

Next, crumble the butter with your fingers then slowly add in ice-cold water.

Once combined, all you have to do is knead until you have a yellow ball of dough.  Wrap your dough with Kling wrap then place inside the refrigator to keep it cold.

Next, in a hot pan, place a knob of butter then saute garlic and onions.  Once caramelized, add in the ground pork/beef.  You can add in some bullion cubes if you want or just use salt and pepper to taste.  Next, season with chili powder, oregano, thyme, and hot sauce.  Add more hot sauce if you want your patties extra spicy.  Wait until cooked and set aside.

Now, get your dough and start rolling.  Cut a piece of dough, about the size of a golf ball then roll with your rolling pin.

Now, get a bowl then place it upside down.  Press the mouth of bowl to your rolled dough and then trace with a knife to form perfect circles.

Now, get your filling, which should be cool right now.  Place some on top of the dough.  You can add cheese, because everything with cheese tastes good ^_^  I was also kind of aiming for the "cheesy beef" version of Jamaican patties that I love from De Original Jamaican Pattie Shop.

All we have to do now is fold the circle in half then pinch and fold the edges using your fingers.  You can also use a fork to have a much nicer and cleaner design of the edges.

Place the patties on a toaster oven pan and "bake" until golden brown.  I placed X marks on both faces of the patty to let the steam escape and also to cook and melt the cheese thoroughly.  It will only take a few minutes until the crust is cooked.
Jamaican Patties
Here's what it looked like after. The taste is pretty much close to the patties I used to buy when I was working in Manila which are yummy and kind of addicting, but the crust I think I have to work on.  It was not flaky but sure was tasty.  The taste was exactly the same as store-bought version, but the texture was not close.  I'll figure out next time how to make the texture similar to the ones I used to have.  I think the secret is lots of butter.

Hope you enjoy today's recipe!
Have a great weekend!

  7. I've never really tried Jamaican Patties before but this fairly sounds easy to replicate (*crosses fingers*). At least we'd have some variety of dishes to experiment on at home. :) Definitely bookmarking this entry.
